Named after the Italian provinces of Reggio Emilia and Parma (Reggiano is the adjective for Reggio Emilia, while Parmigiano is the adjective for Parma). Along with Reggio Emilia and Parma, it is also made in the portions of Mantua (Lombardy) on the south bank of the River Po, as well as in the parts of Bologna west of the River Reno and Modena (both of which are included in the Emilia-Romagna area).
