Of the six main kinds of pecorino, all of which have protected designation of origin (PDO) status under European Union law, pecorino romano is arguably the most known outside of Italy, particularly in the United States, which has been a significant export market for the cheese since the nineteenth century. Although the majority of pecorino romano is manufactured on the island of Sardinia, its birthplace also encompasses Lazio and the provinces of Grosseto and Siena in Tuscany. Ancient Roman authors wrote about this cheese and how it was made.
